Just Another Day

About Just Another Day

This rainy, relaxing work was written for a music competition labeled "Moonthly Music" after Twitch.tv streamer Moonmoon. The challenge of the contest was to write and produce an original piece in one month - and that's just what I did. Each "Moonthly Music" also contains a lick or motive that is required to be in the composition somewhere. The one for this month was "The Art of the Fugue" and required the use of the famous Bach fugue subject as heard in the piece.

Just Another Day follows a simple ABA structure overall and has unique instrumentation including harp, marimba, synths, and bass. Starting with a nice and "homey" intro, the harp then states the fugue subject for the first time. This is not a fugue, however, and the piece goes on to introduce the main melody with plenty of grace notes on the keyboard synth.

After the main melody, the fugue section begins. This section is by no means an actual fugue but does state the same subject in a few different voices that overlap each other, reminiscent of a fugue. The syncopated bass and harp parts in this section make the mood a bit more lively as the interweaving fugue sections clash over top. The rain intensifies and then, rather suddenly, everything calms down. The rain lessens and the bass returns to its long, drawn-out line to feel at peace again. Slowly, all the voices fade as just another day has passed by.
