Sunset Beach

About Sunset Beach

This chill, latin-influenced jazz chart was written for a music competition labeled "Moonthly Music" after Twitch.tv streamer Moonmoon. The challenge of the contest was to write and produce an original piece in one month - and that's just what I did. Each "Moonthly Music" also contains a lick or motive that is required to be in the composition somewhere. The one for this month was "The Lick" the well-known and extremely common lick popularized by this video.

Sunset Beach follows a simple AABA form and, being a Jazz chart, contains an improvisation section. I got the idea for this piece when messing around on the piano and I played the opening piano part you hear now. That piano lick is a simple repetition of Cmaj9 to Dmin9, creating a very smooth and relaxing mood. This mood I experienced when first applying the lick is what led to the creation of the name, and the rest all came from there.

I had always wanted to try my hand at LoFi, and I figured Sunset Beach was a great place to start. It's calming chord progression and "soft piano" plugin were already very chill, so I added some vinyl crackle and syncopation to make it feel more LoFi. I would not consider this chart truly LoFi, but I like to think it is relaxing and smooth nonetheless.
